Abstract
News editors obtained the following quote from the background information suppli ed by the inventors: “Generally, scanning devices such as scanners, laser scanne rs, image readers, optical readers, indicia readers, mobile computers, terminals , or the like read data represented by printed or displayed information bearing indicia (e.g., symbols, bar codes, quick response (QR) codes, direct part markin g (DPM) codes, etc.). In general, these scanning devices scan various features, such as black and white elements of a barcode or dots/embossments on a DPM indic ia, by illuminating the DPM indicia with light in order to capture an image of t he DPM indicia. This captured image may be decoded or otherwise converted into t ext. In this way, decoding of indicia is dependent upon the way in which the ind ica is illuminated. However, Applicant has identified a number of deficiencies a nd problems associated with conventional methods of illuminating, scanning, and/ or decoding indicia.”
