It is important to study animal behavior to understand the evolution and ecology of species and developing strategies and measures to conserve rare species. The study of the time budget of closely related species makes it possible to identify the species-specific patterns of behavior. A comparative analysis of the time budget of common crane (Grus grus) and demoiselle crane {Anthropoides virgo) in their premigration period, during which they usually feed in agricultural fields, has been carried out. Species differences in foraging strategies have been identified. Demoiselle crane individuals forage while moving across fields; common crane individuals forage standing still. Therefore, the common crane, which traditionally uses fields for feeding, forages less energy-intensely than the demoiselle crane, which is a steppe species and began to use agricultural landscapes after colonizing virgin lands from the middle of the last century. The common crane spends more time preening than the demoiselle crane, and juveniles of both species spend less time on this activity than adults; on the whole, juveniles spent less time on vigilance than adults; however, no statistically significant differences have been found. Both species spent the least time on resting and other activities.
