Reporters obtained the following quote from the background information supplied by the inventors: “Advances in materials and systems to analyze and characterize biological and biochemical materials have led to improved understanding of the mechanisms of life, health, disease and treatment. For example, genomic sequenci ng can be used to obtain biomedical information in diagnostics, prognostics, bio technology, and forensics. The detection of distinctive nucleic acid sequences i s critical to many endeavors including identifying microorganisms, diagnosing in fectious diseases, detecting genetic abnormalities, identifying biomarker associ ated with various cancers, rating genetic susceptibility to selected diseases, a nd evaluating patient’s response to medical treatments. Accordingly, oligonucleo tide-based deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) microarrays may become a useful tool for large-scale parallel analyses of genome sequence and gene expression. Current ap plications of DNA microarrays include global analyses of transcriptional process es, evaluation of clinical course of tumors, and accelerated discovery of drug t argets. Manufacturing these oligonucleotide-based DNA microarrays may need relia ble chemical synthesis on a solid surface.”
