The following quote was obtained by the news editors from the background informa tion supplied by the inventors: “Virtual certification numbers may be used to in crease interaction (e.g., transaction) security when they can be associated with a merchant. For example, a virtual certification number may be associated with a merchant when a customer is using a browser extension, and the extension can r ecognize the merchant associated with the website for which the customer generat ed the virtual certification number. However, conventional techniques for genera ting virtual certification numbers for in-person shopping is more difficult, if not impossible. As a result, generated virtual certification numbers may not be bound to specific merchants, which may leave virtual certification numbers susce ptible to fraud.
