Reporters obtained the following quote from the background information supplied by the inventors:“The present disclosure relates to robotic inspection and trea tment of industrial surfaces.”In addition to obtaining background information on this patent, NewsRx editors a lso obtained theinventors’ summary information for this patent: “Previously kno wn inspection and treatment systemsfor industrial surfaces suffer from a number of drawbacks. Industrial surfaces are often required to beinspected to determi ne whether a pipe wall, tank surface, or other industrial surface feature has suffered from corrosion, degradation, loss of a coating, damage, wall thinning or wear, or other undesirableaspects. Industrial surfaces are often present within a hazardous location-for example in an environmentwith heavy operating equipme nt, operating at high temperatures, in a confined environment, at a highelevati on, in the presence of high voltage electricity, in the presence of toxic or nox ious gases, in thepresence of corrosive liquids, and/or in the presence of oper ating equipment that is dangerous to personnel.Accordingly, presently known sys tems require that a system be shutdown, that a system be operated at areduced c apacity, that stringent safety procedures be followed (e.g., lockout/tagout, con fined space entryprocedures, harnessing, etc.), and/or that personnel are expos ed to hazards even if proper proceduresare followed. Additionally, the inconven ience, hazards, and/or confined spaces of personnel entry intoinspection areas can result in inspections that are incomplete, of low resolution, that lack syst ematiccoverage of the inspected area, and/or that are prone to human error and judgement in determiningwhether an area has been properly inspected.
