Abstract

News editors obtained the following quote from the background information suppli ed by the inventors:“Localization techniques of mobile robots can include proce sses that allow a robot to determine itsposition and orientation (or “pose”) wi th respect to its surroundings. A robot that can build a map of itssurroundings can localize itself within the map to exhibit a degree of autonomy. This proces s of buildinga map and using the generated map is known as Simultaneous Localiz ation and Mapping (SLAM). SLAMrelates to the building of a map (mapping) and th e use of the map (localizing), and therefore includes aprocess associated with localization and a process associated with mapping. The robot can execute theseprocesses simultaneously or in a multiplexed fashion. SLAM techniques can includ e building a map usingodometry, mechanical contact sensors or non-contact rangi ng sensors such as a laser rangefinder or imagebased sensor.”
