Abstract
The patent’s assignee is Garrett Transportation I Inc. (Torrance, California, Un ited States).News editors obtained the following quote from the background information suppli ed by the inventors:“Combustion engines require air, fuel and spark to perform. Typically, a combustion engine turns acrankshaft which is attached to pistons within cylinders. In response to the turning of the crankshaft, thepistons comp ress a mixture of fuel and air within the cylinder. This compressed mixture is t hen ignitedwith a spark which causes combustion and forces the piston down into the cylinder, thereby turning thecrankshaft. The rotation of the crankshaft is used to turn a transmission which moves the vehicle. Highercompression within the cylinder before ignition results in better combustion efficiency with more p owerwith less fuel, and fewer exhaust gases. In addition, increasing engine com pression can be an effectiveway to achieve more horsepower.
