Abstract

The following quote was obtained by the news editors from the background informa tion supplied bythe inventors: “Autonomous mobile robots have to be able to ove rcome various terrains, such as stairsand bumps, as well as simple flat surface s. For an autonomous mobile robot using wheels rather than ahumanoid robot, it is difficult to overcome various terrains simply by adjusting outputs of the whe els. Inparticular, when the cross-sectional area occupied by the robot is small , the robot can be widely used, butis disadvantageous in overcoming rough terra ins.
