News editors obtained the following quote from the background information suppli ed by the inventors:“Biofouling refers to the fouling of submerged structures ( e.g., ship’s hulls) and involves the degradation ofthe primary purpose of under water surfaces due to the accumulation of matter and organisms, such as, forexa mple, algae, plants, barnacles, microorganisms, or the like on the underwater su rfaces. Problematically, especially when dealing with the submerged portions of marine and naval vessels, the accumulation of suchmatter and organisms creates a drag on the vessel’s propulsion system. More particularly, the greaterthe fou ling, the greater the drag force and, correspondingly, the greater the portion o f the propulsionforce that must be used just to overcome the additional drag. T he additional force required has a directimpact on the fuel consumption, wear a nd tear, maintenance, and monitoring of a plurality of mechanicalsub-systems wh ich might not operate at their optimal levels. Additional consequences of the gr eater fuelconsumptions include increased pollution production and associated gr een-house-gas emission.
