From the background information supplied by the inventors, news correspondents o btained the followingquote: “Current systems that generate accessible documents are not adapted to cope with the differentcontent types (such as images, form fields, tables, and charts) that are added to documents in portabledocument for mat (PDF) after the original PDF is created. Specifically, current systems are d esignedwith conventions, such as a top-down, left-to-right readout of text, and some modern features are notintended to be read according to such a convention . Moreover, current systems consider a time featureswere added to a document, i rrespective of the location of the feature within the document. Thus, screenrea der output rendered from those accessible documents is often incomprehensible an d gives the screen reader user little context. This is increasingly problematic as more documents are provided to recipientselectronically and without accessib ility tools, such as braille.”
