Reporters obtained the following quote from the background information supplied by the inventors:“The term SLAM refers to “Simultaneous Localization And Mappin g,” and was initially applied to problemsof independent movement of a mobile ro bot (device). In some such systems, the location of the mobiledevice (e.g., rob ot) is necessary-that is, its location on a map of an environment-as is a map th eenvironment, so that the mobile device can determine its relative location wit hin that environment. Insome known systems, however, these tasks cannot be perf ormed simultaneously, which results in substantialdelays when processing mobile device location information.
