The assignee for this patent, patent number 12029511, is LEM Surgical AG (Bern, Switzerland).Reporters obtained the following quote from the background information supplied by the inventors:“Robotic surgery is well known in the art, as is the applicati on of robotic techniques to spinal surgeryprocedures such as pedicle screw plac ement. Many robotic surgery systems, such as the da Vinci roboticsurgery system from Intuitive Surgical, are teleoperated. Multi-arm robotic surgical systems a re availablein the field, for example those provided by Cambridge Medical Robot ics, but these known systems are oftenalso teleoperated and are all comprised o f single arms deployed separately with some level of coordinationprovided by a remotely-positioned control unit. Systems comprising multiple arms on multiple c artshave significant drawbacks regarding integration into surgical workflow, al ong with an undesirably largefootprint in the operating room. Also, in cases wh ere these multi-arm systems do utilize a single cart, stillthe coordination bet ween the arms is done by a physician who “closes the loop” with his eyes and hands while he sits in the control unit. Moreover, the control of teleoperated unit s by a remotely-positionedcontrol unit does not provide the level of control re quired for a full range of surgical procedures, particularlyin the case of spin al surgery. Accuracy will inevitably be inferior to a system where all robotic a rms arefixed to, and coordinated by, a single chassis comprising a control unit .
