The following quote was obtained by the news editors from the background informa tion supplied by theinventors: “Driving a motor vehicle or riding in an autonom ous vehicle presents challenges in navigatingstreets and particularly when maki ng turns, especially left turns. In some intersections, when turning left,drive rs have not only to pay attention to the incoming traffic but also to the presen ce of light vehicles(bikes, e-bikes, kick-scooters, etc), which may be coming f rom both directions of traffic. In some cases,those light vehicles are hidden b ehind parked vehicles and become visible only very late, requiring an instantre action by the turning vehicle. If a car has engaged in a left turn and suddenly sees or detects such avehicle, then it has to stop in most cases, stopping in t he middle of the road with incoming vehicles, whichis extremely dangerous. This will only get worse in the future with the rise of shared electric vehicles which become very popular and are able to drive at speed around 35 mph, sometimes h igher, thus surfacingeven faster in such intersection and forcing drivers to ta ke very quick decisions.
