News editors obtained the following quote from the background information suppli ed by the inventors:“Some existing robotic vehicles, such as robotic vacuum cle aners, have two standard drivable wheels anda castor wheel, all of which operat e together to allow the vehicle travel across a surface, such as a floor.To mov e forwards in a straight line, the standard wheels are both driven in unison. To turn, one of thestandard wheels can be driven, or one of the standard wheels c an be driven at a faster rate than theother wheel, which causes the robotic veh icle to spin. In these robotic vehicles, motion and control can be somewhat limi ted due to the use of standard wheels. For example, the turning circle of such r oboticvehicles can be large, and the front end of the robot will generally have to face the direction of travel.
