The following quote was obtained by the news editors from the background informa tion supplied bythe inventors: “A barcode is a set of parallel vertical lines o f varying widths and spacings that encodean alpha-numeric value. Barcodes are c ommonly used to encode item identifiers for items to which thebarcodes are coup led. The barcode can be used by a point-of-sale system to quickly identify the i tem toexpedite a user’s checkout.
