News editors obtained the following quote from the background information suppli ed by the inventors:“Minimally invasive surgical (MIS) instruments are often pr eferred over traditional open surgical devicesdue to the reduced post-operative recovery time and minimal scarring. The most common MIS proceduremay be endosc opy, and the most common form of endoscopy is laparoscopy, in which one or more smallincisions are formed in the abdomen of a patient and a trocar is inserted through the incision to form apathway that provides access to the abdominal cav ity. The cannula and sealing system of the trocar areused to introduce various instruments and tools into the abdominal cavity, as well as to provide insufflation to elevate the abdominal wall above the organs. The instruments can be used to engage and/or treattissue in a number of ways to achieve a diagnostic or the rapeutic effect.
