Abstract

The following quote was obtained by the news editors from the background informa tion supplied bythe inventors: “There is a need for surgeons to be able to acce ss real-time and pre-recorded computergeneratedand/or camera images in the ope rating room. In addition, the operating room (OR) healthcareprofessionals need multiple viewing ports providing 3D surgery site information to such personnel f or themto accomplish their OR tasks. Since the 1800s, surgeons have relied on t he standard optical microscope(SOM), which uses multiple lenses in a dual tube configuration to create optical zoom and magnificationdesigned to be viewed by a human operator. In addition, OR personnel also need to be able to recall elect ronic medical record (EMR) information during surgery, such as 3D MRI’s, CT scan s, and otherimaging, which currently is done through 2D viewing on a light boar d in the operating room or throughmultiple monitors throughout the OR, or in ad jacent clinic/diagnostic rooms. In the recent past, somelarge medical device ma nufactures have introduced SOM’s that project video through a wired connectiono nto 3D monitors which require the OR personnel to wear polarized 3D glasses, and which require thesurgeon to strain, crane, or lean for hours to observe. As th e 3D glasses are polarized up to 50%, this issomewhat akin to havi ng a surgeon wearing sunglasses to surgery and does not provide the surgeon withgood ergonomics or state-of-the-art digital technologies.
