The following quote was obtained by the news editors from the background informa tion supplied bythe inventors: “Liquid dispensing operations, such as for micro array fabrication, may involve the use of aliquid dispensing device such as a p rinter (e.g., an inkjet printer) to deposit liquid droplets onto selectedsites on a substrate such as a glass slide to create (or add material to) a (typically two-dimensional) arrayof spots on the substrate. Depending on the application, the spots may be sites for carrying out chemicalor biochemical reactions or sy nthesis (e.g., of nucleotides, proteins, etc.), and/or analysis of one or more components or features of the spots. One example of microarray fabrication deposi ts droplets of nucleosidephosphoramidites in solvent onto the substrate as part of the synthesis of biomolecules (e.g., nucleic acids).Afterwards, the substra te surface on which the spots are located may be post-processed in a flow cell module, which is separate from the printer. In the flow cell module, one or more bulk fluids are washed overthe substrate surface as needed to prepare the subst rate surface for the next iteration of printing (e.g.,to extend oligonucleotide s on the substrate surface). In other words, after processing in the flow cell module, the substrate may be returned to the printer, after which additional drop lets may be deposited onthe pre-existing spots on which other droplets were pre viously dispensed. The separate steps of printingand flow cell processing may b e repeated any number of times, depending on the application.
