The following quote was obtained by the news editors from the background informa tion supplied bythe inventors: “Many vehicle manufacturers employ robotic units during vehicle painting to not only openand close the doors of the vehicles, b ut to apply paint to the vehicles. Typically, one robotic unit is usedto open a nd close the doors of the vehicles and another robotic unit is used for paint ap plication. Usually,opening and closure of the doors is accomplished by insertin g a tool (e.g., a pin, a paddle, a gripper, etc.)into the window channels in th e doors or via other such comparable engagement. Before the doors areopened, ho wever, the robotic units typically require confirmation that the vehicle door is not only present,but sufficiently engaged by the robotic unit, absent which, m ovement and operation of the robotic unitwill cease.
