Abstract
The following quote was obtained by the news editors from the background informa tion supplied bythe inventors: “During a CT scan, a patient is positioned on a surface/bed that slowly moves througha gantry while an x-ray tube rotates aroun d the patient, shooting narrow beams of x-rays through thebody. CT scanners use special digital x-ray detectors that are located directly opposite the x-ray so urce.As the x-rays leave the patient, they are picked up by the detectors and t ransmitted to a computer thatprocesses the data into an image. The use of CT sc ans for patients with head injuries and convulsionshas many benefits for medica l diagnosis and analysis but has raised concerns due to the use of radiationdur ing the procedure. CT scans use x-rays and all x-rays produce ionizing radiation . Ionizing radiationhas the potential to cause biological effects in living tis sue. This is a risk that increases with the numberof exposures added up over th e life of an individual.
