The infection usually lasts for about a week. It is characterized bysudden onset of high fever, myalgia, headache and severe malaise, non-productive cough, sore throat, andrhinitis. Most people recover within one to two weeks without requiring any medical treatment. However,in the very young, the elderly and peo ple suffering from medical conditions, such as lung diseases, diabetes,cancer, kidney or heart problems, influenza poses a serious risk. In these people, the i nfection may lead tosevere complications of underlying diseases, pneumonia, and death, although even healthy adults and olderchildren can be affected as well. Annual seasonal influenza epidemics are thought to result in betweenthree and five million cases of severe illness and between 250,000 and 500,000 deaths ever y year aroundthe world.
