Abstract
Reporters obtained the following quote from the background information supplied by the inventors: “Use of robotic technologies presents a number of advantages o ver traditional, manual surgery procedures. In addition to other advantages, rob otic surgeries often allow for greater precision, control, and access. Despite t hese advantages, however, the pre-existing robotics platforms have built-in limi tations that are tied to their structural designs and underpinnings. In the abse nce of a truly flexible system, hospitals and health care practitioners are forc ed to acquire a variety of robotic systems in order to robotically perform a var iety of procedures. The high capital costs, combined with the relatively special ization of the systems, have slowed adoption of robotics platforms for surgery.
