News editors obtained the following quote from the background information suppli ed by the inventors: “Soft robots and manipulators offer many advantages compare d to traditional robots, such as bio-compatibility, safety, resilience, and econ omic viability. These features have gained them an important role in a broad ran ge of potential applications. Drawing from the observation that most biological lifeforms have compliant bodies, soft robots use deformable and resilient materi al for both their torso and limbs. Popular materials like dielectric elastomer ( DE), silicone rubber, and PDMS all have moduli of 10-1000 kPa and a density slig htly over 1 g/cm3, which are similar to those of human muscles. However, the hig h mass density and low energy density of these elastomers severely limit the speed and strength of soft robots. Accordingly, there is a long-felt need in the art for improved soft robot component.”
