News editors obtained the following quote from the background information suppli ed by the inventors: “Patient ventilator asynchrony is a mismatch between a mech anical ventilator and a patient receiving partial ventilator support. Asynchrony between a patient and the ventilator can have significant consequences on a pat ient’s health and recovery time. It is a common phenomenon, with incidence rates ranging from 10% to 85%. Patient ventilation asynchr ony might be due to factors related to the patient, to the ventilator, or both. This issue has been associated with unwanted outcomes, such as discomfort, dyspn ea, worsening of pulmonary gas exchange, an increased work of breathing, diaphra gmatic injury, sleep impairment, and increased use of sedation or neuromuscular blockade, as well as increases in the duration of mechanical ventilation, weanin g time, and mortality. Currently clinicians are required to continuously monitor a patient’s ventilator data to check for patient ventilator asynchrony, which m ay require manual evaluation of a large amount of data by an expert.”
