This document illustrates a pointer devi ce configured to indicate the points wherein to perform a welding operation to a n industrial robot. The pointer device is detectable by the robot by means of an electro-mechanical device, which includes a cable that unwinds from a coil carr ied in an orientable way by the robot. The free end of the cable is hooked to th e tip of the rod-shaped pointer device. When the tip of the pointer device is po sitioned at a given point, the position of the point is calculated based on the unwinding length of the cable and the orientation angle of the coil, measured by respective encoders.
