(Mis)conceptions and perceptions of artificial intelligence: A scoping review

Understanding individuals’ AI perceptions and misconceptio ns is crucial as their beliefs not only influence how they employ AI technology but also inform the design of effective programs to enhance AI literacy. “This study aims to uncover patterns of AI-related (mis)conceptions among indivi duals from various disciplines but without an AI-related background. Forty-five articles were reviewed, and the results revealed 19 themes and categorized into: “What is AI”, “How does AI work”, “Fears of AI”, and “Hopes for AI”. Different patterns of misconceptions between different age groups are discussed and nine f actors that can influence the formation of (mis)conceptions have also been ident ified.
