Background Information “Mechanical surface treatments, such as “deep rolling process”, are being used t o enhance the surface strength and/or subsurface of a metallic substrate. The te rm “deep rolling” refers to a surface rolling treatment using rolls applied with force with the purpose of inducing deep plastic deformations and compressive re sidual stresses in near-surface layers of the substrate. This process is in cont rast to a process often referred to as “roller burnishing” which is usually appl ied with much lower forces or pressures and mostly aims to obtain a compressive residual stress with low plastic strain and certain surface quality especially i n terms of roughness.
