By a News Reporter-Staff News Editor at Robotics & Machine Learning Daily News Daily News – From Washington, D.C., NewsRx journali sts report that a patent application by the inventors Dalton, Maxim (New Britain , CT, US); Kashanipour, Amir R. (New Britain, CT, US); Wang, Shengnan (New Brita in, CT, US), filed on February 9, 2022, was made available online on September 2 6, 2024. The patent’s assignee is Newfrey LLC (New Britain, Connecticut, United States). News editors obtained the following quote from the background information suppli ed by the inventors: “Identifying discontinuities and defects in a weldment is o f immense importance, particularly in oil and gas pipelines where a discontinuit y in welding of pipelines can lead to a leak at a high economic or environmental cost. Various types of discontinuities may include, but are not limited to, cra cks, presence of pores and bubbles, incomplete or insufficient penetration of we ldment, linear misalignment of metallic bodies, lack of thorough fusion between the metallic bodies, undercut or over enforcement of weld material in upper or l ower weld zones, or blowout of the top surface formation. Early identification o f presence, type, size, and location of discontinuities in weldments can help we lding and inspection technicians make the necessary repairs in a cost-effective manner. As used herein, size may refer to length, width, and/or volume of the di scontinuity corresponding to its shape (e.g., head angle of the discontinuity).
