The following quote was obtained by the news editors from the background informa tion supplied by the inventors: “The availability of an accurate model of the wo rking environment of a robot, i.e.the knowledge of the coordinates of physical or virtual surfaces which the robot should not touch or pass, is a prerequisite for collision-free motion planning in robotic systems.Conventionally, this envi ronmental model is derived from CAD models of the robotic system, used commonly for offline planning of the system, or is approximated using computer vision sys tems (e.g.RGBD cameras, or Lidar) mounted at/near the system.
