Reporters obtained the following quote from the background information supplied by the inventors: “In image editing and composition, users often desire to extra ct or otherwise segment an object or multiple objects (i.e., foreground objects) from the remainder (i.e., background) of an image. Image segmentation is a proc ess of generating a matte (or mask) for an image and applying the matte to the i mage to separate a foreground object from the background. A matte can include, f or instance, values (e.g., alpha values) for each pixel to indicate which pixels have foreground information and which pixels have background information. Often, some pixels of an image, particularly those around edges of objects and in reg ions corresponding to hair, glass, and motion blur, can have values indicative o f a combination of both foreground and background information. Accurately segmen ting the foreground from the background in these regions is particularly challen ging.”
