The following quote was obtained by the news editors from the background informa tion supplied by the inventors: “Three dimensional (“3D”) printing is a process of making a three-dimensional solid object from a digital model. Typically, 3D p rinting is an additive process, when successive layers are built upon previous l ayers to “grow”the object. Generally, additive manufacturing refers to any meth od for forming a threedimensional (“3D”) object in which successive layers of m aterial are laid down according to a controlled deposition and solidification pr ocess. Such conventional methods include fused deposition modeling (also commonl y referred to as 3D printing), which extrudes materials comprising liquids (e.g. , polymeric melts or gels) and extrudable solids (e.g., clays or ceramics) to pr oduce a layer, followed by spontaneous or controlled curing of the extrudate in the desired pattern of the structure layer. Other conventional additive manufact uring processes include depositing solids in the form of powders or thin films, followed by the application of energy and/or binders often in a focused pattern to join the deposited solids and form a single, solid structure having the desir ed shape. Generally, each layer is individually treated to solidify the deposite d material prior to deposition of the succeeding layer, with each successive lay er becoming adhered to the previous layer during the solidification process.
