Abstract

News editors obtained the following quote from the background information suppli ed by the inventors: “Minimally invasive surgical (MIS) instruments are often pr eferred over traditional open surgical devices due to reduced post-operative rec overy time and minimal scarring. Laparoscopic surgery is one type of MIS procedu re in which one or more small incisions are formed in the abdomen of a patient a nd a trocar is inserted through the incision to form a pathway that provides acc ess to the abdominal cavity. Through the trocar, a variety of instruments and su rgical tools can be introduced into the abdominal cavity. The instruments and to ols introduced into the abdominal cavity via the trocar can be used to engage an d/or treat tissue in a number of ways to achieve a diagnostic or therapeutic eff ect.
