This review assesses, based on recent literature, the chall enges and progress in developing basic neuromorphic systems, focusing on ‘materi al-neuron’ concepts, that integrate structural similarities, analog memory, rete ntion, and Hebbian learning of the brain, contrasting with conventional von Neum ann architecture and spiking circuits.”
