However, the more complex the task, the more training required to successfully teach an employee to perform the task. Training a new employee to perform a high ly complex task can be both expensive and time-consuming. As another example, a workplace may use a subject matter expert (SME) to teach the trainee to perform a particular task. An SME is an individual, often an employee or consultant, who possesses a deep understanding of a particular job, process, department, functi on, technology, machine, material or type of equipment. Typically, the SME culti vates expertise through a combination of experience and training, which may take the SME many years to develop.
