The following quote was obtained by the news editors from the background informa tion supplied bythe inventors: “Parcel and other distribution centers may recei ve an arbitrary mix of items of various sizes,dimensions, shape, weight, rigidi ty, and/or other attributes, often in a cluttered arbitrary mix. Each itemmay h ave machine readable information, such as text and/or optically or otherwise enc oded information,which can be machine read and used to route the item, e.g., vi a an automated sorting/routing systemand/or processing. To read the information for a given item, in a typical approach the items are separatedfrom one anothe r via a process known as “singulation.”
