Abstract

The following quote was obtained by the news editors from the background informa tion supplied bythe inventors: “With a trend towards portability and away from larger footprint computing devices, mobilephones and network-connected tablets are becoming dominant computing platforms. The smaller touchscreendisplays of these and other small-format computing devices provide less space for visual/tac tileuser interface navigational aids. It can be difficult for a user to locate a portion of a visual/tactile userinterface to accomplish particular functional ity of an application being executed by such a device. Forexample, locating the portion of the visual/tactile user interface to accomplish the particular funct ionality may require a user to navigate many levels of a hierarchy of visual/tac tile user interface display portions.This may frustrate the user, particularly since the smaller display size of the small-format computing devicemay be more difficult to navigate.”
