The drive unit includes a spindle assembly coupled to the robot arm, aZ-axis mechanism for moving the spindle assembly up and down in a Z dire ction (vertically), and one ormore coaxially stacked motors. The robot arm is l ocatable and operable in a vacuum environment, andthe drive unit is locatable i n an atmospheric environment. A bellows may be used to contain the vacuumenviro nment in the space where the robot arm operates. The spindle assembly, the Z-axi s mechanismfor the vertical movement of the spindle assembly, and/or the coaxia lly stacking of the motors generallyrequires a substantial depth and volume of the vacuum chamber where the robot operates.”
