Patent number 12128558 is assigned to Persimmon Technologies Corporation (Wakefi eld, Massachusetts,United States).The following quote was obtained by the news editors from the background informa tion supplied bythe inventors:“Technical Field“The example and non-limiting embodiments described herein relate generally to a vertically compacttraversing robot that can be utilized in material-handling v acuum-environment systems and otherapplications.“Brief Description of the Prior Developments“A material-handling robot includes a robot arm coupled to a drive unit, the rob ot being translatablealong a track or rail system. The robot arm may include an upper link, a lower link on the upper link,and an end-effector on the lower li nk, the end-effector being configured to accommodate a payload ina material-han dling operation. The drive unit includes a spindle assembly coupled to the robot arm, aZ-axis mechanism for moving the spindle assembly up and down in a Z dire ction (vertically), and one ormore coaxially stacked motors. The robot arm is l ocatable and operable in a vacuum environment, andthe drive unit is locatable i n an atmospheric environment. A bellows may be used to contain the vacuumenviro nment in the space where the robot arm operates. The spindle assembly, the Z-axi s mechanismfor the vertical movement of the spindle assembly, and/or the coaxia lly stacking of the motors generallyrequires a substantial depth and volume of the vacuum chamber where the robot operates.”
