From the background information supplied by the inventors, news correspondents o btained the followingquote: “Robotic devices may operate within a confined port ion of a physical area or workspace. Mobilerobots may perform routine tasks, su ch as vacuuming, sweeping, mopping, cutting grass, etc., withoutmoving into cer tain areas specified by the user. However, on occasion, a vacuuming robot operat ingwithin a first area may be permitted to travel into a second area prior to s atisfactory completion of, forexample, a vacuuming task within the first area. In other instances, the vacuuming robot may collide withand, potentially, damag e a fragile or unstable object that is not detected by sensors accessed by the vacuuming robot. In other instances, a user may simply prefer that a vacuuming ro bot remain outside ofan area, for example, if the area is currently in use. Thu s, it may be useful to confine a robotic device soas to operate within certain areas and to prevent unwanted transition between areas.
