Abstract
The following quote was obtained by the news editors from the background informa tion supplied bythe inventors: “Patient ventilator asynchrony is a mismatch bet ween a mechanical ventilator and a patientreceiving partial ventilator support. Asynchrony between a patient and the ventilator can have significantconsequenc es on a patient’s health and recovery time. It is a common phenomenon, with inci dence ratesranging from 10% to 85%. Patient ventilat ion asynchrony might be due to factors related to the patient,to the ventilator , or both. This issue has been associated with unwanted outcomes, such as discom fort, dyspnea, worsening of pulmonary gas exchange, an increased work of breathi ng, diaphragmatic injury, sleepimpairment, and increased use of sedation or neu romuscular blockade, as well as increases in the durationof mechanical ventilat ion, weaning time, and mortality. Currently clinicians are required to continuou slymonitor a patient’s ventilator data to check for patient ventilator asynchro ny, which may require manualevaluation of a large amount of data by an expert.”
