News editors obtained the following quote from the background information suppli ed by the inventors:“Parcel and other distributions centers may receive an arbi trary mix of items of various sizes, dimensions,shape, weight, rigidity, and/or other attributes, often in a cluttered arbitrary mix. Each item may havemachin e readable information, such as text and/or optically or otherwise encoded infor mation, whichcan be machine read and used to route the item, e.g., via an autom ated sorting/routing system and/orprocessing. To read the information for a giv en item, in a typical approach the items are separated fromone another via a pr ocess known as “singulation”.
