Abstract

The following quote was obtained by the news editors from the background informa tion supplied bythe inventors: “Material processing apparatus, such as plasma a rc torches and lasers, are widely used inthe heating, cutting, gouging and mark ing of metallic materials known as workpieces. For example, aplasma are torch g enerally includes a torch body, consumables, such as an electrode and a nozzle h avinga central exit orifice mounted within the torch body, electrical connectio ns, and passages for cooling andarc control fluids (e.g., plasma gas). Optional ly, a swirl ring is employed to control fluid flow patternsin the plasma chambe r formed between the electrode and the nozzle. In some plasma arc torches, a retaining cap can be used to maintain the nozzle and/or the swirl ring in the torch body. Gases used in thetorch can be non-oxidizing (e.g., argon or nitrogen), o r oxidizing (e.g., oxygen or air). A plasma are torchis configured to produce a plasma arc, which is a constricted ionized jet of a plasma gas with high temperature and high momentum.
