Abstract

Reporters obtained the following quote from the background information supplied by the inventors:“Minimally invasive surgical (MIS) instruments are often prefe rred over traditional open surgical devicesdue to reduced post-operative recove ry time and minimal scarring. Laparoscopic surgery is one type ofMIS procedure in which one or more small incisions are formed in the abdomen of a patient and a trocaris inserted through the incision to form a pathway that provides access to the abdominal cavity. Throughthe trocar, a variety of instruments and surgi cal tools can be introduced into the abdominal cavity. Theinstruments and tools introduced into the abdominal cavity via the trocar can be used to engage and/o rtreat tissue in a number of ways to achieve a diagnostic or therapeutic effect .
