Abstract

Reporters obtained the following quote from the background information supplied by the inventors:“Surgical instruments and systems incorporating ultrasonic fun ctionality utilize ultrasonic energy, i.e., ultrasonicvibrations, to treat tiss ue. More specifically, mechanical vibration energy transmitted at ultrasonicfre quencies can be utilized to treat, e.g., seal and transect, tissue. A surgical i nstrument incorporatingultrasonic functionality may include, for example, an ul trasonic blade and a clamp mechanism to enableclamping of tissue against the bl ade. Ultrasonic energy transmitted to the blade causes the blade to vibrateat v ery high frequencies, which allows for heating tissue to treat tissue clamped ag ainst or otherwise incontact with the blade.”
