Abstract

The following quote was obtained by the news editors from the background informa tion supplied bythe inventors: “Social media platforms typically associate avat ars, user icons, profile pictures, etc. withuser accounts. These images differe ntiate users, which can be helpful when a user is adding another userto a netwo rk of friends, browsing through a list of users, or even identifying who is post ing on the user’sfeed. Typically, a default icon is used when a user has not up loaded or selected a profile picture to beassociated with their account, and so me systems may allow a user to select from pre-set stock avatars.In particular, casual users of a social media platform may be less motivated to select an imag e or to take a picture of their own face to upload and share publicly. Lacking a n identifying profile picture, such userswith default icons may be less likely to form connections with other users and more likely to decrease useof the soci al media platform as a result. Thus, encouraging users to adopt a profile pictur e can increaseuser engagement and retention.”
