From the background information supplied by the inventors, news correspondents o btained the followingquote: “Identifying and tracking objects within a space po ses several technical challenges. Forexample, Identifying different features of an item that can be used to later identify the item in an imageis computationa lly intensive when the image includes several items. This process may involve id entifyingan individual item within the image and then comparing the features fo r an item against every item in adatabase that may contain thousands of items. In addition to being computationally intensive, this processrequires a signific ant amount of time which means that this process is not compatible with real-tim eapplications. This problem becomes intractable when trying to simultaneously i dentify and track multipleitems.”
