Abstract

The following quote was obtained by the news editors from the background informa tion supplied bythe inventors: “In a computer networked environment, an instrum entation service can evaluate variousmeasured metrics using anomaly detection t echniques for anomalies in individual nodes of the network orcommunications amo ng nodes. Anomaly detection techniques may lead to over-counting (e.g., false positives) or under-counting (e.g., false negatives) of anomalies. Over-counting m ay result in the servicemaking too many detections and sending too many notices of anomalies to a system administrator. Thesystem administrator may be overwhe lmed with alerts regarding false positive anomalies and may be unableto check e ach, thereby nullifying the efforts of the service. Conversely, under-counting o f anomalies mayresult in issues in the networked environment remaining unchecke d. Either result may lead to an increasein issues as ignored anomalies exacerba te any remaining problems in the environment.”
