Reporters obtained the following quote from the background information supplied by the inventors: “Inrecent years, autonomous mobile robots, in particular serv ice robots, are being increasingly employed inthe household, for example for th e cleaning or monitoring of an apartment. In such cases systems areemployed tha t compile a map of the environment that is used together with a SLAM algorithm f or navigation(Simultaneous Localization and Mapping, see, e.g. H Durrant-Whyte and T Baily: “Simultaneouslocalization and Mapping (SLAM): Part 1 The Essential Algorithms” in IEEE Robotics and AutomationMagazine, Vol. 13, No. 2, pgs. 99-1 10, June 2006). Here a map, as well as the location of the roboton the map, is determined with the aid of sensors (e.g. laser range scanners, cameras, contact sensors,odometers, acceleration sensors, etc.). In many cases, only a temporary map is compiled, meaning thatthe map is compiled anew for each work sequence.
