Automated data management practices in university libraries of Jammu and Kashmir: a study in India

Purpose Libraries are essential for knowledge sharing, so adopting automated data management is important. This study aims to investigate the status of automated data management in university libraries across Jammu and Kashmir, India.Design/methodology/approach Using a quantitative approach, data was collected through structured questionnaire. The questionnaires were distributed among 20 Library Professionals. Out of the 20 questionnaires distributed, 13 responses were received, resulting in a response rate of 65%.Findings Results indicate varying levels of knowledge regarding automated data management practices and significant challenges, including inadequate infrastructure and limited information and communication technology access. Despite these obstacles, there is a high interest in adopting automated data management practices.Social implications Improving automated data management in libraries can enhance knowledge dissemination and access to information, contributing to educational and social development.Originality/value This study focuses on automated data management practices within university libraries in Jammu and Kashmir, India. It provides insights into the specific barriers and opportunities faced by these libraries. The findings can serve as a benchmark for similar studies in other developing regions and contribute to the global understanding of library automation challenges and solutions.
