From the background information supplied by the inventors, news correspondents o btained the followingquote: “BACKGROUND ART“Visually-impaired or blind persons face lot of challenges in handling day-to-da y activities due to lackof their visual sensing ability. The current de facto s tandard for helping visually-impaired persons navigateis the ubiquitous walking stick (a traditional “white cane”). The walking stick, however, is a passive device that is very limited in the way it provides feedback to a visually-impaired person regarding obstacles intheir path-feedback that is limited to impact-and surface-related tactile and (somewhat) auditory channels.Challenges associated with these feedback methods include a limited understanding of the associated obstacles in the blind person’s path, which might create some difficulty in makin g a navigation decision.A person who is walking while accessing various kinds o f information visually, not limited to a visuallyimpaired person, may encounter various dangers while walking.”
