News editors obtained the following quote from the background information suppli ed by the inventors:“Visually-impaired or blind persons face lot of challenges in handling day-to-day activities due to lack of theirvisual sensing ability. T he current de facto standard for helping visually-impaired persons navigate is t heubiquitous walking stick (a traditional “white cane”). The walking stick, how ever, is a passive device thatis very limited in the way it provides feedback t o a visually-impaired person regarding obstacles in theirpath-feedback that is limited to impact- and surface-related tactile and (somewhat) auditory channels.Challenges associated with these feedback methods include a limited understandi ng of the associatedobstacles in the blind person’s path, which might create so me difficulty in making a navigation decision.A person who is walking while acc essing various kinds of information visually, not limited to a visuallyimpaired person, may encounter various dangers while walking.”
